Berry Springs Preserve Herps of Texas report, 21Oct2017

It was a beautiful October evening at Berry Springs Preserve for the nine frog watchers who came out for the monthly amphibian monitoring. Unfortunately, the frogs and toads didn't think so - although we had a brief glimpse of a small frog (young American Bullfrog ?) in the northern slough on the way down to the fishing pier, no other amphibians were seen or heard during the hour that we were there. A couple of snakes were seen in/near the ponds, a lot of Common Green Darners were overhead before sunset, a few bats were seen at sunset, and we had a fleeting glimpse of a fleeing armadillo by the playground on our way back to the parking lot.
The monitoring period was 18:55 - 19:55.
Participants were Kathy, Holly & Ben (welcome !), Heike, Jim, Sondra, Carolyn, Sue, and Reggie.
Environmental Conditions at the main pond at sunset:

  • Air temperature = 78.8 deg F
  • Water temperature = 76.0 deg F
  • Sky = No/few clouds
  • Water level = Below average
  • Relative humidity at sunset = 53 %
