The #Anacostiabioblitz is coming up!

The Anacostia River Virtual Bioblitz is only a week away! As you saw, we will be using the #Anacostiabioblitz to generate buzz on social media, please use the hashtag and spread the word!

Carrie Seltzer from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has been a great supporter of the bioblitz and has kindly offered to lead two iNaturalist trainings this week. Last night we had a wonderful happy hour/ training session at the Steel Plate bar in Brookland (DC) with supporters of the Anacostia Watershed Society (AWS) as part of its Watershed Wednesdays happy hour series.

To get ready for the bioblitz you are invited to join biologists at the DOEE Aquatic Resources Education Center in Anacostia Park on Saturday, 09/16, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM for a citizen scientist meet up to help document the animals, plants, and fungi of the Anacostia River Watershed!

WHAT: DOEE biologists have partnered with the Anacostia Watershed Society and fellows from the Academy for the Advancement of Sciences to offer an iNaturalist and BioBlitz introduction.

During this program, you will learn how to document your nature observations to this international database and then we will go outside and make some of our own! Learn how to recognize some of our most common insects, spiders and other arthropods and prepare to be amazed at the diversity of insect life on just a few shrub branches… in addition to all of the other organisms that call Anacostia Park home!

We will also take a moment to recognize the contributions of several stand out DOEE FrogWatch citizen scientists! If you have participated during the 2016 or 2017 seasons, we will recognize you for your time, efforts, and significant observations!

WHO: All citizen scientists and nature enthusiasts are welcome! There is no prerequisite of participation or data submission required, but we hope our active volunteers can make it! Please note that space is limited and advanced registration is required.

REGISTER TODAY! Please register to secure your spot. Participation is currently limited to 24 people.

QUESTIONS: Any questions may be directed to Rachel Gauza (DOEE; Rachel.gauza@dc.gov; 202-440-3951) or Emily Castelli (AWS; ecastelli2@anacostiaws.org; 301-699-6204 x103).

Happy Nature Watching!

We are wrapping up the #Anacostiabioblitz

The Anacostia River Virtual Bioblitz is coming to an end but you still have time to add your observations and to help ID species from your phone/PC. Until midnight! So far we've got:

-1293 observations.
-391 species identified.
-84 people have participated submitting observations.
-65 members have joined the "Anacostia River Virtual Bioblitz" project.

I'd call that a success considering this is our first bioblitz!

Keep on bioblitzing!

Identifying species, do your homework!

Check the iNaturalist app for notifications regarding your observations. Other folks may have confirmed your identification or helped you determine your the identity of your observations. Check those out, confirm identifications or simply thank them or share a comment/story about that observation. Also, you can also help other ID their unidentified observations or just suggest ID to validate their ID.

How did the #Anacostiabioblitz go?

The virtual #Anacostiabioblitz was OUTSTANDING! here are some results:

-1,338 observations
-415 species identified
-88 people made observations
-8 RTE species (rare, threatened or endangered species)
-62 introduced species, including invasive species
-251 plant species
-29 bird species
-7 amphibian species
-5 reptiles
-8 mammals (including dogs and humans!)
-12 fish species
-7 mollusk species
-11 arachnid species
-65 insects
-16 fungi species
-1 protozoan

Thanks so much for participating and for making this citizen science effort a success! But, the fun isn't over yet! we still have an ongoing project call "Biodiversity of the Anacostia River" on iNaturalist (with 902 species identified so far! https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/biodiversity-of-the-anacostia-river). Our challenge is to document the species of the #AnacostiaRiver watershed and use the information for science, conservation, ecological restoration, outdoor recreation and education.

Final Anacostia Bioblitz Numbers

More good news from the bioblitz! after correcting a glitch from the aggregator and after getting additional observations submitted late (after the weekend), we have new figures:

-1,684 observations
-513 species
-103 observers

Make sure you add the event observations to the "Biodiversity of the Anacostia River" project and just keep adding more observations since this is an ongoing project: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/biodiversity-of-the-anacostia-river

Thanks very much folks!
