Spring has finally arrived! Mushrooms to look out for.

At the risk of jinxing it, spring seems to have arrived! A few species to look out for early in the year that I would love to see more observations recorded for PEI:

Winter Polypore (Lentinus brumalis) will be out now. I find it along streams growing on old alder. Twelve observations in the province, but it's likely wide spread in appropriate habitat.

Gyromitra's will be out soon, late April/early May. We could use more observations for this group, but I am specifically interested in Gyromitra korfii (or montana). If you find G. korfii/montana growing in a hardwood stand, please let me know so I can get a sample for microscopic work to determine if we have korfii or montana.

Last year there were our first two observations of Bog Beacons, (Mitrula). We likely have more than one species here, but wet areas are not where most of us walk. Keep an eye out, collect a sample if you can and I will come get it for microscopic work.

Witches' Cauldron (Sarcosoma globosum) has not been found on PEI, but has been found in New Brunswick and Cape Breton, so its possible it could be here. It is rare and most likely to be found in old growth hemlock and spruce stands, mossy undergrowth.
