Second Nature Walk - Newton Woods Walk - October 9
Today, for my walk, I decided to venture to the Newton Woods behind the soccer field. The weather was a beautiful fall weather, sunny yet chilly (63 degrees Fahrenheit). The orange leaves on the ground clearly showed the change in seasons. As I was looking for fungi, I noticed that the soil near the fungi I found looked moist, probably due to the rainy days last week. Like we’ve studied in class, fungi live in cool, dark, and moist places. I also found most of my fungi on fallen branches (dead organic material). This makes sense as fungi are known to be decomposers. During my walk, I was also shocked to find so many different types of mushrooms within 10 feet of each other. They all had different shapes and sizes. The color, on the other hand, remained mainly the same between the different types of mushrooms. They all tended to have a whitish, gray shade. Some mushrooms did tend to have a green hue. I hypothesized this could serve as a way to camouflage from predators.
