Spending as much of my time outside enjoying, looking at and discovering what is happening in the natural world is a daily activity for me. I am a plant ecologist by training and life-long interest, most of my training and career has been on the west coast of North America, with a special interest in Mediterranean and desert ecosystems. I now live in Oregon. My appreciation of Oregon’s natural diversity was fostered by field trips with the Native Plant Society of Oregon, working with Oregon Flora and teaching plant ecology and field botany courses at Lane Community College, Eugene OR, exploring and learning about ecosystems from the coast to central Oregon along with my students.
Over the last 12 years I have been able to more fully explore our local natural area Howard Buford Park (HBRA) and Mt Pisgah Arboretum located within the 2000+ acres of HBRA. I have participated in programs and events in the Arboretum for over 30 years and I have been a member of the Friends of Buford Park & Mt Pisgah Stewardship Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) for over a decade. Also located within HBRA is the FBP Native Plant Nursery where I supervise a phenology monitoring project with a team of dedicated volunteers, now entering our 5th season (2024) of observations posted to our iNat project.
