I have been studying plants for over 25 years, including how to use them, how to grow them, where they grow in the world, and the interactions that they have with other organisms.
These pursuits have taken me from the garden to the wilderness, and from my original home on the Canadian prairies to the rugged mountains of South America, where I completed my doctoral dissertation on the pollination ecology of orchids in the genus Dracula.
I have published in both the popular and scientific press, and authored a field guide to the plants of the Andean cloud forest.
I have worked as a botanist for several agencies and non-profits, and have taught botany and ecology for a number of institutions including Lane Community College, and Portland State University.
I am currently a Senior Instructor of Biology at the University of Oregon.
