Galled manzanita berries? I can't find anything similar. Every berry had exit holes--I was trying to find one that was intact to bring home and see what happens. I had to go a ways before finding a few. Photo 3 has a couple of views of a wasp that was on an adjacent berry. I didn't see it until I looked at the photos at home or I would have tried for a better shot.

Yet another tarplant not historically documented in the Santa Cruz Mtns bioregion. 100+ plants scattered across hillside. Substrate is Miocene sandstone. Area shows sign of recent brush-cutting for Baccharis removal and may have been mowed this year or last. Fortunately, with its virgate form, nearly-sessile flowers and distinctive pit glands, this tarplant is easy to ID.

Ok so it’s recently planted in the Demonstration Garden but it looks pretty cool. Apparently someone stole the barrel cactus. I chatted with a volunteer who was monitoring the garden and planting a few new CA natives.

? A volunteer here planting CA natives says it’s an Oregon Oak. Says he has two in his yard in Fremont. Bark seems wrong for Valley oak. Only acorns were few, tiny, and too high up for me. The sign says “Black Oak” but we’ve known for years that’s wrong.

Yeah Ok so I did go check. Somewhere in Arastradero Preserve. My hiking buddies and I are Deinandra fans, and there wasn’t a sign saying “don’t go here” where I walked off trail. Heh, I brought my kids mountain biking right here in the early 90s, and they also did lots of volunteer work here and nearby. Before that while working at Syntex since 1980 I was all over the place at Arastradero for long lunch time hikes.
Here we found a lovely chunky Deinandra lobbii plant, a scrawnier one nearby (pic 6, which looks more like what I saw at Brushy Peak in late 2019). We are definitely on board with Three-way Tarweed, however it got here, and hope it gets protected. In a total weed field BTW, but under a nice Valley Oak.
As penance I will keep supporting Grassroots Ecology particularly with gear donations.

Arguably protocarnivorous with all the insects trapped in the stem glands at this point.
Apparently without a burl, though I may have missed it under the duff.
