@loarie can this change be committed now? Fishbase entry notes that "Issue - This species is a synonym of Hippocampus whitei Bleeker, 1855 according to Lourie et al., 2016 (Ref. 115213). This species record will be removed."

A more recent study that backs this view is Short, G., D. Harasti and H. Hamilton (2019) Hippocampus whitei Bleeker, 1855, a senior synonym of the southern Queensland seahorse H. procerus Kuiter, 2001: molecular and morphological evidence (Teleostei, Syngnathidae). ZooKeys No. 824: 109-133.

This is an accepted view in Australia to the point that H. procerus records in iNat have been converted (reidentified) 'manually'. Would it now be less disruptive to simply inactivate the H. procerus record and add it as a synonym to the existing H. whitei record?

Looping in @projectseahorse (aka Lily Stanton) who I know feels strongly about seahorse taxonomy

out of curiosity, why did this change involve inactivating whitei and swapping to what seems to be a second whitei taxon, rather than just a direct swap of procerus into whitei?

good point, thats how we used to do it in 2017 when this was set up. It was committed this week by donalddavesne
@donalddavesne - just use taxon swaps for lumping - same steps as those described here except that the output taxon will already exist just like you did here https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/117434
thanks for all your help curating relationship unknowns @donalddavesne!

I reverted, switched Hippocampus whitei 622426 with Hippocampus whitei 102838, and recommitted to avoid all those replaced IDs and having to do things like update the conservation status - should be all set
