Butterfly and moth enthusiast since early childhood. Used to collect in Britain and Europe, then Africa.
I used to be a motor racing photographer as well, and learned how to photograph butterflies on an old film Nikon with a 55mm lens.
Progressed to life histories, gave up the motor racing and then joined the Lepidopterists' Society of Africa. Started really serious collecting, but slowly photography won.
Over 20 years I amassed a huge slide collection, and eventually wrote and published 'Field Guide to Butterflies of South Africa' by Struik Nature.
Used the royalties to buy my first Nikon DSLR, and an iMac for image processing. More books followed. Now using Canon and PC!
I retired at end July 2022 and have qualified as a FGASA nature guide - contact me if you want to go on a butterfly tour!
