I grew up imbued with an abiding love of the natural world, fostered and mentored by an inspirational group of scientists and naturalists in the Eastern Cape section of the Mountain Club of South Africa. After graduating in biological sciences, I spent my professional life cultivating bivalve shellfish, guided by my special affinity for the ocean and all things marine.

The South African West Coast where I live and have spent much of my life is a biological wonderland, sadly threatened by overexploitation of natural resources and relentless development. Observing and conserving this is my passion
