Where are all of the "observations" going?

The end of summer is approaching and my observations are becoming more challenging. I've been hitting Irvine Regional at dawn most days in hopes of it being the "best" time to observe wildlife, but I'm seeing fewer and fewer creatures. I was thrilled to have been greeted by the call of a pair of Great Horned Owls (thanks for the ID iNaturalist community!), but I couldn't see them. I encountered two coyotes--one walking across the park's picnic area hunting for scraps along with the crows, and the other leaping through the brush, but didn't get "iNaturalist-worthy" shots of either. Virtually no bugs, reptiles, interesting birds, other mammals. It's been this way for a while. Is it that time of the year, or am I "looking for 'life' in all the wrong places"?
