Observations-Part 1-BIOL 449-Flowering Plant Diversity

Date: January 20th, 2024
Location: 48.467191 -123.302998.

Bc-hydro right of way bordering Uvic FH, facing E, slope 15%, 40masl.
Weather: Cloudy, 6°C, mist, WNW 8km/hr, snow on ground.
Ecology: Disturbed site, thicket.
The shrub layer is dominated by Symphoricarpos albus, Mahonia nervosa, Rosa nutkana and Rubus ursinus. Bryophytes: Kindbergia oregano, and Hylocomium splendens.
The site is located within 20 meters of Haro Woods, a second-growth forest.

Berberis nervosa
Erect shrub, with yellowish inner wood, and ascending stem.
Compound leaves (9 leaflets, alternate odd-pinnate), shiny surface, spiny teeth.
Immature inflorescence is racemiform (6).

Rosaceae
Rubus ursinus
Prostrate, creeping shrub, rhizomatous.
Prickly stem
Compound, alternate, puberulent leaflets in 3s, terminal leaflet largest and lobed, all leaflets are double toothed, with reticulate veins, and serrulate margins, estipulate.

Rosa nutkana
Aculeate shrub
Paired thorns along the stem
Compound, toothed leaflets (7), round tips.
Red round hips (1cm) achenes present.
