Third Nature Walk - Plants Walk - October 16

For my third nature walk, I wanted to go to Newtonville, as I've never been there before, and enjoy a relaxing walk before the start of the my classes. It was a chilly day, but even though I was wearing my winter puffer jacket, the sun was still strong enough to warm up my red checks an frosted/runny nose. On my walk back to the Newton campus, I saw some flowers (angiosperms) in some wild patches and cracks in the sidewalk. I even captured a photo of a pollinator bee, Bombus impatiens, which plays a critical role in the pollination of angiosperms. During foraging, the bee transfers pollen from the male to the female part of the plant enabling fertilization. This process is essential for plant reproduction, as it leads to the formation of seeds and fruit. The pollination services are crucial for the survival of both wild plants and agricultural crops, promoting genetic diversity and ecosystem stability. This process of pollination from with the help of a third party shows a key disadvantage of plants' land colonization. In the past it was easy for aquatic plants to disperse their gametes, however on land, some flowers have to rely on other animals.

After my walk on to Newton Campus, I took the bus and headed to main. There, I decided to go on another walk to the Hammond Pond Reserve to find different plant species for this walk. I found different Bryophyta plants which are nonvascular plants like mosses. I've noticed they were located in damp and wet environments. I find most of mine in cracks between rocks where some humidity and water might've been kept. I also found some seedless vascular plants also known as Polypodiopsida. I found a fern looking plant called Osmundastrum cinnamomeum. Lastly, I also took pictures of some gymnosperms (non-flowering seed plants). The trees that I found most beautiful were the Pinacee and the Platani (according to the suggested species).
