3rd Nature Walk: Theme = PLANTS! 10/24/2024

I walked along the reservoir and then off to the Brighton campus for this nature walk. Taxa such as Bryophyta, Polydipsia, Gymnosperms, and Angiosperms were located while on this nature walk. I extremely enjoyed trying to find these different types of land plants while on my nature walk. I did, however, find it difficult to locate the polydipsia (fern) on this walk. I took me a while until I was able to spot some tucked away behind some trees. I was also super intrigued to find a grape tree along with my walk. I was initially expecting to find a flowering plant for the angiosperm group, but I got lucky and found the Riverbank Grape alongside the reservoir.

I enjoyed this nature walk the most out of all the walks so far because it allowed me to really take in the plants around me and reflect all the different types of organisms that surround me on a day-to-day basis.

Fungi Nature Walk 10/7/2024

This past weekend I walked through the forest near the Brighton campus and Frates Softball/Baseball athletic fields in search for fungi. As I was walking, I noticed that most of the visible fungi (not too deep within the trees) was found near the bottom of the trees. I believe this is the case because it is more difficult for light to reach there and absorb any type of moisture that may sit there, allowing for the growth of fungi. I was also lucky enough to find mushrooms in the nearby grass. These most likely formed after a light rain shower, as the grass here captures and retains moisture at a high rate. It was interesting to see the different type of fungi that grows on trees here, compared to the fungi that grows on the trees back in Florida where I live. It is most common to see Spanish Moss dangling from the trees in Florida, whereas here most of the trees are cover in some form of lichen. I really enjoyed looking for fungi on this nature walk because it made me look more intently while I strolled through the trees when normally I just take in the view from a broader point of view.

Boston College Reservoir 9/29/2024

On Saturday, September 29th, I walked around Boston College's Reservoir located in Chestnut Hill. It was a beautiful and temperate day for a walk around the reservoir. I began around 5pm and ended around 5:45. It was roughly a mile, and a half walk around the reservoir. There were many people taking a stroll, running, walking their dogs, and families enjoying the perfect day. There were also many organisms that were present alongside the trail as well as within the water. In any direction there was some form a life that was different from the next. A wide variety of trees, weeds, ferns, and birds were present on this walk. It was such a great way to reflect on the week and take in the earth's beauty that surrounds us every day!
