A solo visit after work nearby. Because of the intense sun and heat, I had intended to stay along the nature trail, which is mostly shaded. But when I noticed that most of the southeastern portion of the WEA was recently burned -- and it looks GREAT! -- I decided to encircle as much as I could while avoiding a lot of direct sun exposure. I walked the southern nature trail to the powerlines, then walked north, then circled the burn clockwise. I returned to the nature trail and took it back to Jet. All duplicate species -- including the grasshoppers, the buckeyes, and the swallowtails -- represent different individuals; grasshoppers were abundant on the sandy road under the powerlines. Because of the condition of the most recent burn, I guessed that if there are any Bachman's Sparrows onsite, then the burn is where they will be found. As a result, I used my Merlin app on a number of occasions. I got one, two-minute recording with at least 11 Bachman's Sparrow songs audible, but have not yet found a way to upload the .wav file into iNaturalist (I had Merlin
share" the file four different ways, but nothing got sent). And no, I never saw the sparrow. The weather at the start was sunny and 94 degrees ("feels like" 100!), with a light breeze. I left at 1526 and headed home.
Found in compost pile. Extremely common on the property.
Walking the old southern terminus of the Florida Trail for a bit. Water levels have dropped quickly over the last couple weeks and there were several dried up puddles with dead fish and shrimp in them.
