on barberry bush growing at base of a black cherry
The organism has an orange body and brown wings. The wings have a white spot each (reminiscent of eyes). The body looks ‘furry’. It is small. Perhaps 1.5-2 inches long.
I stepped on a board that had been washed up on a river bank and found this one underneath. It was smooshed and dirty and with me stepping on it I assumed it wouldn't be viable so I opened it. Surprise! I feel responsible for it since I opened it, so I'm going to rear it in one of my butterfly mesh cages.
Matches this one I reared last year: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/112860274
