Spinulose Wood Fern, a.k.a. Evergreen Wood Fern (originally Dryopteris spinulosa) in the "FERN FINDER" booklet by Anne & Barb Hallowell (1981), the best visual fern key I've ever found.
Per the iNaturalist taxa, it keys to Dryopteris carthusiana [the new scientific name], where "the innermost pinnule on the bottom side of the bottom pinna ... is longer than the adjacent pinnules."
This one was found along the Lily Dale Nature Trail, New York (an old-growth forest). The photo was cropped from the lower part of photo D018443 [Hemlock Varnish-self] and reprocessed at 100% resolution. (possibly overcorrected for cloudy weather conditions, i.e. too yellow)
