Found under wood lying on the ground in grazed pasture.
Fieldwork with @emma_brockes.
At night. Attracted to lights (UV trap) which we had set in a garden surrounded by native Podocarp-broadleaved forest.
I have examined specimens from here before, it’s a North Otago endemic, about 20mm in length, found in Oamaru area and inland from there. A similar undescribed species occurs to the south, and M. temukensis across the Waitaki River to the north.
very occasionally seen under logs in beech forest. Small; <20 mm. Very stinky.
