Attracted to porch light. Despite appearances, alive - and returned to the wild (= garden) :-)
ooooo, a small green noctuid with a white stripe on Olearia virgata.
Could this be a very early instar Meterana exquisita? Not enough photos of caterpillars anywhere! Doesn't look much like the chonky caterpillar in https://www.researchgate.net/publication/287164039_Lepidoptera_of_small-leaved_divaricating_Olearia_in_New_Zealand_and_their_conservation_priority
huge pinkish noctuid caterpillar eating Olearia virgata leaves.
Doesn't look like anything pictured in https://www.researchgate.net/publication/287164039_Lepidoptera_of_small-leaved_divaricating_Olearia_in_New_Zealand_and_their_conservation_priority
It resembles a member of the Erechthias genus. It seems to have lost one of its wing 'flaps'. The one on the left side can be best seen in photo 4.
Got-em. Saw eight in total. A little 20km walk round trip from Woodville.
Excellent spot with numerous decent Olearia virgata, which are on a steep slope and not in water, muddy seepage, bog etc.
And this time the conditions were good. Light to no winds in the valleys, high cloud which cleared entirely, relatively warm night (no gloves needed!)
Will add more shots when I get home.
