Neneo macho is seen in Patagonia steppe. This was taken in chacobuco valley. It is less frequent than typical neneo and typically found in higher altitudes I believe per my experience. Small wren type birds seemed to have taken a liking to this plant which is interesting due to its prickly nature.

I saw this Neneo macho on the side of a steep rocky slope. The soil was loose, rocky, and dry so I hypothesize that this plant must have deep and strong roots to hold on in this environment. The plant was about 1m in diameter and 25cm tall. The leaves were sharp and spiky while the flowers are bird-beak-shaped and vivid in color, and not sharp like the leaves. There were Neneo macho plants scattered around the hillside at this particular elevation. It seemed that all the Neneo macho plants were blooming at the same time
