This is the first record of this species since 1972, and the first in the Waianae range since 1916.

In small groups on grass stalks, near water. Observed waggling their front legs in the air.

This is my first observation of this species and it is a real beauty! It is a widespread, holarctic species that is rarely encountered. AKA Triangular Lucent Fly.

Syrphidae: Helophilus hochstetteri - Hover Fly, Metallic Blue

Underneath a log. Immobile at first, I thought it was the remains of some sort of dead beetle. Very glad I poked it! This is the most beautiful roach I've ever seen!
