Some Pipestem Clematis (Clematis lasiantha), photographed along the Orchard Loop Trail at Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve in western Santa Clara County, CA. Note that there are two photographs in the set of pictures documenting this plant: the lead shot (Shot 1), which provides a closeup of some flowers and closed flower buds, and the remaining shot (Shot 2), which provides a broader view showing the vine as it is clambering down the boughs of a small tree. Identified as C. lasiantha from the vine's single-flower inflorescences (Shot 1), its pinnately compound leaves with 3 to 5 leaflets (Shot 2), and its spring blooming (photographs were shot at the end of March). Western Virgin's Bower (Clematis ligusticifolia) blooms in the summer, has inflorescences that are cymes of several to many flowers, and has pinnately compound leaves with 5 to 15 leaflets each.
