Poisonous - Orange web caps
The key differences between Gymnopilus sapineus (scaly rustgill) and orange webcap mushrooms (Cortinarius species) are:
- Genus: G. sapineus belongs to the genus Gymnopilus, while orange webcaps belong to the genus Cortinarius.
- Habitat: G. sapineus grows on dead coniferous wood like pine logs, whereas orange webcaps are mycorrhizal and grow on the ground in forests.
- Edibility: G. sapineus is considered inedible due to its bitter taste, while orange webcap species like Cortinarius rubellus and C. orellanus are deadly poisonous and should not be consumed under any circumstances.
- Toxicity: G. sapineus lacks toxic compounds and is non-poisonous, but orange webcaps contain toxins like orellanine that can cause kidney and liver failure if ingested
- Appearance: G. sapineus has a dry, scaly orange-brown cap, while orange webcaps like C. rubellus have a slimy, glutinous orange cap surface.
- Gills: G. sapineus has crowded, rusty orange gills, while webcaps have rusty brown to orange gills attached to the stem in a webbing pattern.
- Psychoactive properties: incorrectly states G. sapineus contains the hallucinogen psilocybin, while the other sources do not mention any psychoactive compounds in either species.

Quite a long cort of some sp?. Greyish cap (when fairly wet) on purple stipe. A few myc threads at the base fluoresce under UV. Mixed Eucalypt forest.

Location: Alongside private road in eucalyptus leaf litter. Appears in same spot each year. Caps viscid but drying. Generally cream/white with light fawn tones to the caps. Gregarious, appearing across approximate 2 square metres.
No noticeable smell, taste.
Spore print = Red-Orange-Yellow #105 as per LF Costermans (2005).
Last 2 images are of over-matured fruitbodies still remaining.
