This roadrunner was at a bird feeder at Sandia Crest (~10,678 feet elevation!) and was first observed lying flat in the seed tray of the feeder. After it was disturbed by me and left, a few Mountain Chickadees arrived at the feeder. When I returned to the spot sometime later, the roadrunner was back in the feeder tray and then was observed on the ground under the feeder swallowing a bird -- perhaps a chickadee it had caught. Unfortunately I missed the actual capture of the prey bird.

This one had me conflicted. On one hand, I observed variable Fc across the call sequence, which would point me toward eastern red bat. On the other hand, some of the calls seem to have two power centers (visible up top in the amplitude axis), which would suggest little brown bat. Definitely open to suggestions.

Found this little guy near the creek’s edge. I know it’s a spiny soft shell turtle. Cared for it for a few weeks, then let it back into the wild. Likes to burry in the sand, and peek his head out of the water.

I was totally, totally shocked to see this guy today. I must have startled it because it flew up from some brush near where I was walking, and then it took quite a bit of searching for me to track down where it had gone. It was VERY good at disguising itself as a bump on a log. I've been looking in all my field guides and at photos here on iNat, and Eastern Whip-poor-will seems like the best ID to me, but I have never seen any kind of nighthawk or nightjar before, so I am happy to be corrected if wrong.

Can anyone tell me what the purple thing is? There were many on the flowers of these plants. I should have cut one open...
