Feeding on a lizard at sunset in Johnson's Pasture.
This observagtion is for the lizard.
I saw this snake at rest for a while and then slithering away in the Ballona freshwater marsh.
This is a screen shot from my sons video-as you can see, a part of the tail is missing, thanks to the cat.
This was taken by my son after he got it away from his cat.
Eating a tail of another lizard
Caught and eaten by American crow on rock
Alive but dying (cat got it)
Snake was falling down a small slope and western fence lizard came and grabbed it
Prey source found nearby in form of Slender Salamander. May be small range extension into the valley for this species.
hyper-melanistic ring-necked snake. Possible range extension.
Slender Salamanders Present at this location, prey source. Possible range extension.
Came across this young gopher snake locked in battle with a loggerhead shrike. Moments after I took this photo the shrike returned and carried off the snake.
I came across this unusual scene while hiking back to my car this afternoon. What I think is happening here is that the racer probably tried to predate the alligator lizard, only to have the alligator lizard clamp down on the snake's head. When I came upon them, the snake wasn't moving much. I sat and watched for a bit, but then noticed a mountain biker coming down the trail. When I stood up so he could see me, I must have startled the lizard, because all of a sudden the snake got free, and zipped off into the tall grass on the side of the trail. After a second or two, the alligator lizard also dashed off, albeit in the other direction. I felt a little badly about disturbing the situation, but really there was a good chance one or both animals would have been run over by the biker, who was demonstrating his species' usual level of spatial awareness. (ie none whatsoever. I'm still not sure he ever saw me.) All in all, it was quite a surprising encounter.
(@gregpauly, I thought you might be interested in this one, since it shows the jaw strength of a Northern Alligator lizard from a different angle than the one we know from mating lizards.)
Found and released
So. Alligator Lizard just caught by Common Raven at edge of Hwy 1 at "Sea-lion overlook," a famed spot to view California Condor [several present at this moment]
Salt & Pepper, at sidewalk level again. He may have been hiding near the sweet alyssum or bird of paradise and came out when I was watering.
I believe this yellowlegs is eating an African-clawed frog.

Please confirm or refute: is this another Sonoran Spotted Whiptail
Love the tail bite to avoid predation. Mt. D is heaven!
First observed alive but struggling before being eaten by the striped racer. Snake is included in a separate observation
Eating Western fence lizard. Dropped lizard when tried to get closer picture of snake head. Didn’t even realize had lizard til dropped it. Lizard was still breathing, came by a bit latter and lizard gone as well as snake. Temp 61
Lizard Striped racer dropped. Previous observation. Temp 61
this observation is for the prey

Was it eating a lizard?
Actively eating a lizard
Not sure on the snake ID. Took this photo from my car and the snake moved it’s head behind the rabbit in a protective way, and though I was not in danger I didn’t want to disturb nature from taking course.
Unwittingly got a pic of this lizard mid-snack
Mating
Lyre being eaten by a striped racer. I will create a separate observation for the lyre, located here: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/112218222 . Photo & observation by Bruce Pavalon
In the grasp of, then wriggling free from, the jaws of a southern alligator lizard. Then free, with bite marks on back.
(See https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/112078323 for the alligator lizard.)
Mockingbird vs whiptail
The consensus among people I've talked to so far is that this is most likely a hybrid or the offspring of a hybrid between Masticophis flagellum ruddocki and Masticophis lateralis lateralis. That being said, I'm interested to see if anyone thinks otherwise. Anyone know of other Masticophis hybrid records besides taeniatus x lateralis?
@meandthealiens and I found this snake in treeless desert habitat (more suitable for M. f. ruddocki).
Getting eaten by racer
Forked tail
Cat got to it, these things are so cool :(
Male competition, tangling, and thrashing
The photo was taken by Lisa Hatfield. Lizard survived the encounter with the young cat and was released nearby. Though it may have been injured during the encounter, and during subsequent removal.

This observation is for the prey of the egret
The snake couldn't get the lizard in its mouth because the lizard bit and held on to its own tail. The snake eventually gave up and let the lizard go.
