In steppe, near the edge of saline pond. Originally thought Tortula brevipes but the awns should be smooth and leaf margins revolute. Doesn't seem to fall anywhere comfortably within McIntosh (1986). Unsure if Tortula or Syntrichia. If Syntrichia, I keyed it to S calcicola calcicola which doesn't make sense (not known from North America). Doesn't match up with the saline endemic Tortulas (nevadensis and heimii)

Genus: Rhoicosphenia Grunow, 1860.

Taxonomic Classification:

Phylum Bacillariophyta
Subphylum Bacillariophytina
Class Bacillariophyceae
Subclass Bacillariophycidae
Order Cymbellales
Family Rhoicospheniaceae (AlgaeBase 2023)

Holotype species: Rhoicosphenia curvata (Kützing) Grunow
Currently accepted name for the type species: Rhoicosphenia abbreviata (C.Agardh) Lange-Bertalot (Algaebase, 2020)

Species:

Rhoicosphenia marina (Kützing) M.Schmidt 1899: pl. 213: figs 28-39 (marine) Levkov et al. 2010.

Found on the eelgrass Zostra marina. Collected at Montague Harbour Marine Provincial park (MHMPP): Collected July 20, 2020, Aug 11, 2020, Collected November 15, 2020 and March 7, 2021: Rhoicosphenia marina on Zm MHMPP T31 1Pb+c SA1b Stub2 s4800 (RR-Oct 13-2021)_m003_3.tif; Rhoicosphenia cf. marina D valve on Zm stub 20 En-medial-March 7-2021 (MW) (Aug 24-2021)_005(x2.0k)_3.tif; Rhoicosphenia cf. marina g view on Zm MHMPP Mar 7-2021-5Pa+c T45_3 Mar 21-21 AMF_m037_4.tif.

Valves are clavate, or club-shaped with rounded ends. In girdle view, frustules are distinctly arched. In valve view, the arch prevents resolution of the entire valve face at one level of focus. The genus has heteropolar or isopolar valves which are flexed in the girdle view. The valves are dissimilar in both shape and structure: The concave (R-valve) has a fully developed raphe system, whereas the convex (D-valve) has shortened raphe slits. Pseudoseptum are present at each pole. (Levkov et al. 2010, Spaulding et al. 2021: https://diatoms.org/species/rhoicosphenia_abbreviata/guide)

Within the Salish Sea, Rao and Lewin (1972), Shim, J. H. (1976) and Tynnii (1986) only reported Rhoicosphenia curvata (Kutz) Grunow (= Rhoicosphenia abbreviata). Maher et al. (2010) reports only Rhoicosphenia abbreviata for the West Coast of Canada (McQuoid and Hobson 2001). However, Levkov et al. (2010) and AlgaeBase (Guiry and Guiry 2023) state that R. abbreviata is a freshwater species.

Rhoicosphenia abbreviata (C.Agardh) Lange-Bertalot 1980: 586, fig. 1 A, 3 C, D; fig. 5 A (freshwater) Synonym: Rhoicosphenia curvata (freshwater) (Sims 1996, Levkov et al. 2010, Algaebase 2023). There is debate in the literature whether R. abbreviata is only a freshwater species or also marine. Levkov et al. (2010) gives morphometric measurements for R. abbreviata: length 14-52; width 5-7; striae R-valve is 9-12 in 10 µm; striae D-valve is 9-12.
Measurements for R. marina: length 29-45 µm; width 8.5-11 µm; striae R-valve is 13-17 in 10 µm; striae D-valve is 16–20 (Levkov et al. 2010: 151, Table 3). Plinski and Witkowski (2020) give overlapping measurements for R. abbreviata and R. marina, except the valves of R. marina are broader than R. abbreviata, having a maximum width of 8 µm.

The MHMPP Galiano Isl. specimens shown here measure: length 30.5 -74; width 8.5 -10.3; striae R-valve is 16-22 in 10 µm; striae D-valve is 17-22, placing them in the taxon R. marina.

NIH BLAST databases have 26 entries for Rhoicosphenia spp.: 23 entries for R. abbreviata and 3 entries for R. stoermeri (freshwater). There are no barcode or genome records for R. marina.

This is a first report for Rhoicosphenia marina in Western Canada and the Salish Sea.

Methods:

Collected by brushing or scraping leaf sections of Z. marina from MHMPP, July 20, 2020, August 3, 2020, October 16, 2020, March 7, 2021 and July 2021. Cells were cleaned with concentrated hydrogen peroxide or nitric acid at 100 C for 3-5 hours to remove organics, then rinsed multiple times in ddH20 to a neutral pH. Mounted on SEM stubs or in Naphrax on slides for light microscopy. Imaging with a Nikon TE300 and Tuscen DigiRetna16 MP camera or Nikon E800.
Live specimens were imaged with either a Nikon TE300 or Nikon E800 with either bright-field or DIC. In-situ, environmentally prepared samples were made using minimal contact of 8-10 mm leaf section, soaked in ddH2O to remove salts and dried through an EtOH series (50%-100%) and finished off with 100% Hexamethyldisilane HMDS (Hazrin-Chong and Manefield 2012). Mounted on carbon stickies onto aluminum SEM stubs and imaged with either the Hitachi s4800 or TM4000 at AMF, at University of Victoria, B.C. My thanks to Siobhan Schenk and Laura Parfrey in the Parfrey Lab at UBC for molecular data from the eelgrass and collaboration with IMERSS. Also thanks go to Elaine Humphrey of the AMF, UVIC, imaging by Ron Read, Melanie Quenneville, Laurel Jacobson and Arjan van Asselt. Additional imaging, taxonomy and identifications by M. Webber. Gratitude to the late Andrzej Witkowski, University of Szczecin, Poland who suggested examining R. marina as the likely species so far observed on our eelgrass specimens.

Unsure if it's an ascomycete or one of the moss dot lichens eg Caloplaca, Bryoplaca etc. Sample collected, will require microscopy in the fall.

Seen on a three day solo camping trip to East Cape in Everglades National Park (Cape Sable). I was particularly excited to go shelling on the beach (did not collect any shells, as that is prohibited in ENP) and also try some blacklighting out there.

All of my observations from this trip: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?d1=2022-11-21&d2=2022-11-23&order=asc&place_id=any&user_id=joemdo

My mollusk observations from this trip: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?d1=2022-11-21&d2=2022-11-23&order=asc&place_id=any&taxon_id=47115&user_id=joemdo

Gonna be a while before I finish posting everything and before I finish writing up this journal post summing up the trip but eventually there will be more info here: https://www.inaturalist.org/journal/joemdo/72888-nov-21-nov-23-2022-east-cape-sable-camping

I am also planning on posting some videos to youtube over the next week or so but I'm prioritizing adding my observations first! Here's a link to my channel in case you want to see subscribe to see some videos about this trip: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1Exy70GX48bo6JCDqqRrtw

Gametophytes, previously reported from this stump. Far smaller than I realized!

Step 1: Consult the iNat app from Port Alberni to confirm the location in a last-second plan before driving to Kennedy Lake.
Step 2: Walk the access road, find a small trail in the right area, and walk until my location dot on the iNat map matches the middle of the cluster of sightings.
Step 3: Spend at least 10 minutes searching the nearby forest for a stump matching the ones in the photos.
Step 4: After finding the right stump, spend another solid 10 minutes in miniature world searching the stump for the ferns, including going back to the photos several times for every clue I could find!

I thought I was looking for something larger, but the biggest ones were only about 2mm in size. Even more fun than Botrychium searches ;-) And I must say, I only saw them through the iPhone lens/screen, as they were too small to really see unassisted.

Now that I've seen them once (with all this tech help), hopefully I can find more!
