Ralfsia species are very difficult to determine macroscopically. Combined Ralfsia species (R. confusa, R. fungiformis, R. hesperia, R. integra, R. pacifica) range from Alaska to Baja California.
Ralfsia is a brown crust with rounded edges. Can be mistaken for Pseudolithoderma nigrum because they tend to grow in the same habitats, however their colors differ. Ralfsia spp. tends to be a chocolate brown, sometimes darker, but never pure black as is the characteristic of Pseudolithoderma nigrum.
