Grows on rocks in the high intertidal to subtidal (to 30 m) from Vancouver island, British Columbia, to Punta Santa Rosalia, Baja California.

Grows up to approximately 40 cm within the intertidal zone. Thalli is thick, cartilaginous, with irregular dichotomous branching, with many short branchlets occurring along the edges of compressed axes, mostly dark red in color. Morphology is variable depending on the habitat.
