Congratulations on a Successful 2022 City Nature Challenge

Hello All, and thank you for participating in Team WNC for the City Nature Challenge!

We had a fantastic turnout this year! We beat our 2021 totals in all three categories this year:

Observations:
2021: 7,259
2022: 7,443

Species:
2021: 1,579
2022: 1,735

Observers:
2021: 697
2022: 703

We didn't overcome the Triangle juggernaut this year, but we once again came in second in all categories for the state. We performed well within the USA, in the top 20 for species this year (#17, just three species short of New York City). I'd say we did very well to represent the biodiversity and beauty of our mountains. Thanks to all for your efforts!

Here are the results for our local competition. A big thanks to our Community Sponsors for their donation of the naturalist prize packages. Please thank the Compleat Naturalist, Wild Birds Unlimited of Asheville, and BB Barns Garden Company for their generosity! Please note that if a naturalist won in two categories they will be awarded a single prize for the highest place. That removes them from consideration for the second category and shifts to the next naturalist (also, I'm not eligible!).

Grand Prize, Most Observations: caseygirard, with 674 observations of 363 species
Grand Prize, Most Species: lenrely with 364 species from 501 observations

Second Prize, Most Observations: jackollis, with 467 observations of 280 species
Second Prize, Most Species: dsmorris with 195 species from 282 observations

Third Prize, Most Observations: annkatrinrose with 368 observations of 146 species
Third Prize, Most Species: woodbridge with 164 species from 273 observations
