Congratulations on a Successful 2022 City Nature Challenge

Hello All, and thank you for participating in Team WNC for the City Nature Challenge!

We had a fantastic turnout this year! We beat our 2021 totals in all three categories this year:

Observations:
2021: 7,259
2022: 7,443

Species:
2021: 1,579
2022: 1,735

Observers:
2021: 697
2022: 703

We didn't overcome the Triangle juggernaut this year, but we once again came in second in all categories for the state. We performed well within the USA, in the top 20 for species this year (#17, just three species short of New York City). I'd say we did very well to represent the biodiversity and beauty of our mountains. Thanks to all for your efforts!

Here are the results for our local competition. A big thanks to our Community Sponsors for their donation of the naturalist prize packages. Please thank the Compleat Naturalist, Wild Birds Unlimited of Asheville, and BB Barns Garden Company for their generosity! Please note that if a naturalist won in two categories they will be awarded a single prize for the highest place. That removes them from consideration for the second category and shifts to the next naturalist (also, I'm not eligible!).

Grand Prize, Most Observations: caseygirard, with 674 observations of 363 species
Grand Prize, Most Species: lenrely with 364 species from 501 observations

Second Prize, Most Observations: jackollis, with 467 observations of 280 species
Second Prize, Most Species: dsmorris with 195 species from 282 observations

Third Prize, Most Observations: annkatrinrose with 368 observations of 146 species
Third Prize, Most Species: woodbridge with 164 species from 273 observations

Congratulations to all the winners! I'll be messaging each of you to find out if you'd like to drop by and pick up your prize package at the NC Arboretum or would prefer I mail them to you.

Thanks again, let's get ready for another great City Nature Challenge in 2023!

CNC Starts at midnight this evening!

Hello Everyone,

We're just hours away from the City Nature Challenge! If there are any night owls among this group of naturalists maybe we'll get some porch-light observations of moths and other insects after midnight!

Others might be early birds and pick it up the next morning. Either way, I hope you've got some great time in the outdoors and among our biodiverse mountains planned.

There is a kick-off for all those participating in the City Nature Challenge at noon tomorrow. It will feature naturalists across the state sharing tips on how to maximize your observations and just some general nature topics. I invite you to join us!

There are also lots of great in-person and virtual programs across the state this weekend- including our signature education event at the NC Arboretum, the City Nature Challenge. Please visit this page to find out what's happening and for registration information for all of these happenings: https://nccitynaturechallenge.com/events/

Welcome to the 2022 City Nature Challenge!

Thank you for joining Team WNC!

This year we're competing with 4 other regions in North Carolina for bragging rights on who can find the most biodiversity, contribute the most observations, and recruit the most observers. While friendly competition is great, the real goal here is to work collectively to document the most observations of organisms across our mountains, our state, and the world. Thank you for participating in this worthy effort.

Your help in documenting biodiversity is appreciated. We are offering a chance to earn a NC BioBlitz badge via Science Across NC, a statewide community/citizen science collaborative. There are two ways to earn this patch: 1) Make 30 observations of any wild species in North Carolina between April 29 and May 2 and upload them to iNaturalist by May 8; or 2) Make 15 observations and make 25 identifications. Observations must be made between April 29 and May 2, but all observations and identifications may be done in iNaturalist any time between April 29 and May 8. Then, follow this link to report you participation and claim your patch: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeK9ZTpopofMzpERNBAArk8l7IV6hWIp8Rp2s0M6EXfGNchhQ/viewform

To add to the fun, we'll be giving a Naturalist Prize Package to the top three observers of this project in the categories of Most Observations and Most Species. I'll reach out to the winners by May 15.

Have fun, stay safe, and thanks for contributing to our understanding of the biodiversity of our mountains!
