Come out and join us for this FREE family-fun event! MJC’s Great Valley Museum will offer an extraordinary, hands-on expedition about the amazing life of bugs with The Beetle Lady, Dr. Stephanie Dole. Discover the many kinds of insects that pollinate and their relationships with plants. We will learn about the crucial importance of honey bees and have an opportunity to gaze at their homestead with Uncle Jer’s hive on display. Meet live bugs in all their life cycle stages, play games, engage in art activities, and see incredible insects from around the world.

About this event

Beetles make up a large part of the natural world and are being discovered constantly. With over 450,000 recorded species, they contain a myriad of biodiversity and ecological roles. They are fundamental to the nature of life on earth. Dr. Dole is an entomologist specializing in education on the wonderful world of terrestrial arthropods. Through her business, Beetlelady, she hopes to instill a love of bugs to inspire conservation of the natural world. Spend an evening glimpsing the beauty and astonishing diversity of insects and learn about Dr. Dole’s research on tropical bark beetles.

Please join us for a fun-filled hour of the tour of birds located on the beautiful campus of CSU Stanislaus. All ages are welcome, but seating is limited! Please reserve a spot for this fun science event. Please indicate in the registration form if you need to borrow binoculars and the amount needed. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

About this event

Join Tom Hofstra from Columbia College for a high elevation wildflower walk! We will meet at the Summit Ranger Station at 9 am and caravan to St. Mary's Pass Trailhead. It is about a 60-minute drive. Once there, we will walk and look for and identify wildflowers. After this years snow, August will be sure to have a wide variety of beautiful wildflowers for us to enjoy.

About this event

Join Ranger Asley to look for birds along the Westside Trail. This is a great place to see hawks, and songbirds foraging in the forest. Bring a pair of binoculars or borrow a pair of ours. We will have identification guides. Wear a hat, bring water, and a snack. Please no dogs for the program. The closest bathroom is the Riverside Day Use area.

About this event

Join a Forest Service Ranger to learn how to identify the trees on the Stanislaus National Forest. We will look at samples and then take a walk to look at trees.

June program will meet at the Pinecrest Community Hall and then we will head to the Shadow of the Mi-wok Trail to identify trees near Meadowview Campground. Flat but uneven terrain through the campground and towards Shadow of the Mi-wok Trail.

August program will meet at the Pinecrest Amphitheater. ADA Accessible.

Bring water, a hat, and wear sturdy walking shoes. All Ages.

Roadside Geology of Sonora Pass with Glen White

9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Meet at Column of the Giants, End at the Summit Ranger Station

Several roadside stops along Hwy 108 offer a glimpse into the geologic history of Sonora Pass. Starting at The Column of the Giants at 9:00 AM, we'll explore some of the dramatic changes the region has experienced over the past 100 million years. One or two other stops will be made as we work our way down the mountain ending at the Summit Ranger Station at approximately noon. Bring water, a hat, snacks, and wear sturdy shoes. All Ages. Sign up ahead of time. 30 people max.
