I am a medical doctor from Mauritius, a small island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, some 1,000 miles away from the east coast of Madagascar. I have a specialisation in epidemiology from the Swiss TPH in Basel as part of the master of Global Health from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. I am working with the Institute of Global Health in Geneva on food markets' biodiversity, and their crucial role in food safety and food security. While acknowledging the importance of food markets as urban drivers of sustainability, for instance providing affordable, nutritious, diverse foods, and economic development etc., we also want to have a better understanding of the epidemiological and ecological interface offered by these food markets (e.g. hotspots for emergence of zoonoses). I am also working with the University Hospitals of Geneva and "Médecins sans frontières' (MSF) on the important topic of snakebites, and their impact on livestock. The distribution map of these venomous snakes will help in their conservation by preventing undesirable encounters with local populations, where many of them are unfortunately injured or killed. In addition, this map will be important for individuals and animals, in case of envenomation, by limiting the number of suspected snakes from a given area.
