I'm a lifelong naturalist living in the Annapolis Royal area of Nova Scotia. I'm originally from eastern Ontario, but now live on 2+ acres of mostly wooded land alongside Round Hill Brook. I came here about 14 years ago, buying a very sadly neglected pre-1860s house. I've left most of the property in its natural state as found other than trying to keep up with removing invasive non-native species.
There's been some good regeneration happening after the invasives were removed. There are some very nice Sugar Maples coming along now. Fortunately, the property was mostly ignored by its former occupants for at least the past 70 years, so there are many interesting things happening here. I've been photographing the flora and fauna as I find time between repair projects on the house. One of my projects since moving here has been to photograph moths at night. This is a continuation of a project at the farm in Osgoode, Ontario where I lived for 35 years. I made a similar project of documenting the flora and fauna on that land. My late husband, Don, and I hiked and canoed throughout much of eastern Ontario until his death in 2008. Don kept field notes and I photographed almost all of our sightings. My natural history photos have appeared in many publications. For several winters, I stayed in the Sky Islands region of southeast Arizona - another terrific area for natural history observation.
I'm currently the admin for the Annapolis Environment & Ecology facebook group which I founded in 2018. I've recently started a group, "Nature Journaling in Nova Scotia". Pet project at the moment is encouraging people to participate in the Homegrown National Park project now that Canadians are included.
