The City Nature Challenge starts in one week!

Hey everyone!

It's that time of year again when I tag you all to remind you to participate in the City Nature Challenge! This year's challenge runs from April 28-May 1. You just need to take photos during this phase. You have until May 7th to upload and ID your observations.

Like previous years, the challenge area is the county of Philadelphia plus all counties that directly share a border with Philadelphia. This includes Montgomery, Bucks, and Delaware counties in PA and Camden, Gloucester, and Burlington counties in NJ. During the CNC last year, the Greater Philadelphia Area did pretty well with just under 20k observations (yet again), 2190 species, and 905 observers (will we finally go past 1k observers this year?).

I'm tagging all of you here because you are one of the top observers in our region (either all-time or recently) and we would love to have your help in making even more observations during this 4 day period at the end of the month. And to make sure we get as many species as possible, I've made a simple website that shows you all the species that have been reported in our region during April and May, but not yet seen during the CNC: http://targets.cncphilly.org/ (you can currently see the species we missed last year, but I'll be updating it for this year's CNC soon). The species are organized in descending order of how many observations have been made for that species. As people make observations, they will fall off that list every 30 minutes or so.

We would also love your help in spreading the word about the CNC among your family and friends. You can also tag them in the comments here.

Here are some useful links with more info:

Main CNC website: http://citynaturechallenge.org/
Last year's results: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2022

Thanks for documenting the biodiversity of our region and we hope you'll help us during the CNC as well.

PS: I know some of you aren't in the area anymore or are away during the CNC, but we'd still appreciate it if you can spread the word to everyone you know. Thank you!

Thanks for organizing as always, Navin! Unfortunately I will be out of state for half of it this year, but will contribute what I can. - Celeste (@bugsandbirds)

For the PA folks, this resource is available if you're looking for places to go iNatting: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-yZ130pCQmGa5z-Ja_5LDHbaKSy569IBzEL6RDzTPEg/edit

Looking forward to it! The word is being spread :-)

I can add photos to the project but I won't be able to add too much in relation to identification/microscopy because I am moving to Portugal the first week of May.

Thanks, everyone! We'll take what we can get from those who are only partially here. One of our big goals this year is 1k participants, so even one observation helps! And maybe I'll see one of you in the field. If anyone wants to do any iNatting together in Philly (I don't drive), hit me up. I'd love some company.

Also tagging a couple more people that I missed earlier because even though they might not be top in the region, they are CNC superstars: @jameshoughton, @allisonrhoughton, @debbeer, @mark_fallon, @nsgilmore, @cathybru

@navin_sasikumar I'm another one that will only be able to participate for one day -- I'm now in Susquehanna County and have added the county as a project as a first time participant. Wish us luck! I'll be sure to add some observations to the Philly event as well. Good luck reaching 1000 participants. (I had someone let me know they will be in the Philly area and would participate in the Philly event)

@cathybru Good luck in Susquehanna County! It's exciting to see so many other places in PA participate in the CNC.

I shoot Odes (dragonflies and damselflies), which require at least warm weather and sun. Neither of which are forecast for the period of the this year's CNC. Hence, it is unlikely that I will be able to submit any records.

We'll be out rain or shine... ! Excited to do our part to get at least as many observations as last year if we can! Wet weather will be great for fungi. Maybe some good salamanders, too!

@dannmer @derek @nscronin @wildaboutnativeplants if possible, document your best LM biodiversity hot spots April 28-May 1

Is there a reason Chester County isn't included? I uploaded a bunch of observations from Chester County and they are not being included. The pack of observations from Delaware County did populate. Also noticed on the project home page Chester County isn't listed.

Chester County is in the Wilmington Challenge -- I see your observations there.
check out their page: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2023-greater-wilmington-area?tab=observations
So you are contributing to both automatically and to the overall project

Thanks for the response. Seems weird to not include Chester County as part of the Philly challenge but I'm sure there's a reason!

Anotado por blackhound hace 11 meses

Thanks for responding, @cathybru! @blackhound, we just have Philly and counties that share a direct border with Philly for our area. That's how we started 5 years ago but now Wilmington has claimed Chester County.
