Fourth Nature Walk- Animals

For this nature walk, I included images from 3 different walks that I went on during Thanksgiving break when I was visiting my family. These three walks were in Hilton Head, SC, Port Wentworth, GA, and Skidaway Island, GA. On each walk the weather was mostly overcast and around 65-70 degrees. I noticed that it was very hard to find insects or animals now that cooler weather is moving in. In the summer, I think it would have been much easier to locate more species. I found 6 different types of animals (not including my personal domestic dog and a picture of the foliage that I thought was pretty). For insects in particular, I was able to capture a picture of 2 different types: A wasp and fire ants. I found that for this nature walk, looking for moving animals made me look more in trees, plants, and wet areas rather than just grazing my eyes over everything.

Third Nature Walk- Plants

For my nature walk, I walked near the Res and behind the Plex to find different species of plants. I went in the evening, right before the sunset so the weather was fairly cool, about 50 degrees. It was also super windy, and felt like it was about to rain during the walk. I felt like as soon as I started walking, I was able to find so many different species of plants. I realized that we don't realize how many species of plants there are until you pay conscious attention to what is growing around you. I really enjoyed this nature walk because of how many different plants I located in such a short period of time.

Second Nature Walk- Fungi

On my nature walk, the weather was cool and rainy. I went out in the evening around the reservoir with some of my friends for about an hour. I found many fungi, but I found that the majority I spotted were on or by trees. I think that most of the fungi were harder to spot around this time of year because most of the leaves have fallen and are covering a lot of the fungi that are on the ground. I was unable to identify what type of fungi any of the ones I found were, but I'm hoping someone on iNaturalist will be able to identify them.

First Nature Walk

For my nature walk, I travelled to Stoneham and walked on a trail that edges the Unicorn Golf Course. The trail was very scenic and wooded and I saw many different species of plants and animals along the way. On my walk the weather was slightly chilled, but still seasonal at about 60-65 degrees and partly cloudy. It was also pretty windy that day as well. Along the walk I saw various different types of plants (some of which I have linked to this post). In particular, I noticed that the red tinted plant (linked as an observation), has a tendency to only grow in places where there was little to no shade. I found this interesting and thought about how it probably related to our evolutionary unit because these plants select an unshaded environment as preferable to shaded. Also on my walk, but not linked as an observation, I saw many different types of squirrels. The squirrels varied in color and size. Their differences made me reflect on what modes of speciation were pulling on each individual that would cause them to have different colors. Also, if the black squirrels were more advantageous then grey squirrels in that area because there were so many more of them. Overall, I thought about many topics covered in class and am looking forward to the next nature walk.
