I visited Highland County, VA on January 22, 2024 in an attempt to photograph raptors and other bird species. While Golden Eagle is an expected species in Highland County this time of year, I was rewarded with an amazing hunting encounter involving a young White-tailed Deer being actively pursued by an immature Golden Eagle. At one point the Golden Eagle actually "hit" the deer with its talons but avoided capture. The pursuit easily went on for 3 or so minutes with many active pursuits and capture attempts made, but to no success. A photographic series of some of the activity follows:
