Strongly square stem. Physostegia virginiana seen nearby with similar square red stem, but different leaf shape. Crushed leaves had no smell.
3 ft from edge of small roadside. Very dry, shaded slope, chert soil overlaid and mixed with old remnants of roadside crushed limestone. Vine struggling, several sections of die back, likely due to drought and poor soil. No seed or evidence of flowering from this year. If Clematis terniflora should be thriving in the disturbance at the site, but maybe?
