I am only guessing that this is the Peacock Mantis Shrimp, Odontodactylus scyllarus. Appreciate ID.
Found this little bit of slime mold on a log on the side of the trail in mid-September. It's about an inch long and is a combination about 50 total images. I really should have stopped down so that I wouldn't have had to take so many, but I totally spaced.
A tiny jumping spider keeps a careful eye...well eyes...on the LED panel I used to light the scene a bit. IRL it's about 5mm long and the colors revealed themselves only under this kind of magnification. It's a 5 image stack.
I found that by zig-zagging the kayak across in front of a bird like this I can eventually get close enough for a photo. If I paddled straight to the heron it would have panicked and flown. So even if it is just a GBH, I still liked the opportunity to practice the approach.
