Image by Chris Wells,a resident in my Local Government Area. Thanks kindly Christopher for your willing consent for me to post your photo on iNat (as we discussed today)
Chris found this shark dead on the beach at Lady Bay on ~19/08/2018(or only a day or so before he took this photograph). Chris measured it at 2 metres in length. It is the largest wobbegong shark he has ever found (all as beach washed dead specimens) in Yankalilla Bay (which includes Normanville Beach, Lady Bay Beach, and Shelly Beach aka Little Gorge Creek Beach).Chris has had a lifelong connection with the area, and with Lady Bay in particular, and is in my age group. So this is the biggest wobbegong (or related 'carpetsharks' or 'catsharks' bearing any resemblance) he's seen @ or near Lady Bay for ~6 decades. He and another family member then buried it (in the upper beach region,I think) because the decomposing carcass was beginning to emit a very unpleasant smell, sufficient to upset local residents.
[NB:Although I forgot to ask Chris if he had any opinion as to cause of the shark's death, I can see nothing in the photo that helps me form an opinion either, in that regard]
