When I first saw this snake behind the Nature Center I thought it might be some escaped exotic species, but a closer look shows the stripes and red marks of a garter snake. Most of the black pigment appears to be missing, although there are some spots on the head and along the dorsal stripe. Does anybody have any ideas about what colour aberration this might be?

found by Maureen, and re-found by her when she took me to look for it again… really wanted it to be a Racer, a new species for LaBagh and Cook County, but closer looks at the photos seem to clearly indicate this is one of the Garter Snakes. Which one?

I was taking iPhotos of Weston's Buckwheat https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/185896847 & then sat on rock next to the plant to try to image a spider I noticed on the stalk of the Buckwheat.
When I got up and walked a few steps around the plant I noticed the snake who looked like it had its head in the mid-section of the rodent.
Great Basin Rattlesnakes at this location are for the most part fairly docile, it takes a bit of effort to get them in defensive position. Not this time! It immediately tried to get into defensive position, it was protecting its meal. The meal is probably important this time of year as they return to their den for winter.
I still had the phone on Portrait mode and was too adrenalined to think of trying to get better shots. The snake retreated into a small opening in the rock above the rodent. If you look carefully the white on the snake can be seen it the little cubby. I left the area to let the snake eat in peace. :-)

No, this is not a photograph. Fooled you! Prints are available by special request.
Unfortunately I could not get this guy in hand or lens so this doozey of a field sketch will have to do. This is the first time I've seen this species at Leon Sinks despite expecting it for some time, so I needed to document it. I guess you'll have to trust me I can tell this apart from the skinks, even the ones without blue tails.
It was running around in sandhill under some shrubby sparkleberry that had burned about a year before.
